Spring has finally sprung! We've had a busy few months and thought we'd never see spring weather! Our classes have been investigating plants and their life cycles as well as using Mystery Science to investigate heredity. We've learned quite a bit about where our blue, brown, or green eyes may have come from!
Fractions and multiplication have been our focus in math. We've also revisited addition and subtraction of whole numbers. Math word problems are often a challenge but we are using many different strategies to solve them.
We've all been learning about the events that lead up to the American Revolution and have found it to be a fascinating time during our history. We've been reading about the events in our Magic Tree House series, learning and reading about a revolutionary character called Deborah Sampson, and watching Liberty Kids. We love learning about the American Revolution! So many taxes!
We've enjoyed reading in a new magazine series called Storyworks Jr. The topics are great and really have us engaged! They've prompted some great discussions about trophies and saving wild animals. Our classes continue to use chapter books during our reading times and we've been exploring fables, myths, and legends as well.
Our writing has covered the areas of narrative, expository, and persuasive pieces. We are getting better at typing them on the computer and using Prezi and Google slides to present our written work.
Students have also been taking practice tests for the upcoming MCAS tests. They are ready to give it their personal best effort! Before we know it, we'll be at the end of our third grade year. This year is flying by!

January Update:
We’ve been working very hard in third grade these past few months. We’ve been reading a variety of novels as well as stories from the Houghton/Mifflin Anthology. We been practicing our comprehension skills, comparing different texts, analyzing information, reading to find details, and so much more!
We've learned a lot about our town and where we live in the world. The Hanover field trip was an awesome learning experience for us. Special thanks to Cathy Harder-Bernier for the tour of our town hall. We've been researching and learning about Pilgrims, Puritans, and Wampanoags. We are beginning a unit on the Revolutionary War. We’ll learn many things about our country and how it was formed. Time for Kids keeps us up to date on current events and we’ve had lots of discussion surrounding the presidential election.
Videos, guided lessons, solve & share, independent practice, and game centers make up our math lessons. They are jam packed with learning new concepts. We’ve explored multiplication and division. We’re working on a unit of area, and continue to work on our problem solving skills. There’s lot of new math vocabulary words that we are learning and using in the classroom.
Extreme weather has been the focus in our science unit. From blizzards to hurricanes, we’ve researched and explored how weather happens in our world. We’ve become pretty good at identifying different clouds and predicting our local weather. We'll be studying plants during our second term and learning observing how our plants grow. We're hoping some of us have green thumbs!
The three types of writing have been a huge part of our writing program. We’ve been writing narratives on many different topics. Science and social studies have afforded us the opportunity to continue to write expository pieces on topics we’ve been researching. Our students have also written some pretty convincing /persuasive pieces of writing.
We've collected over 350 articles of clothing for the Visiting Nurses and have been practicing acts of kindness. We've also been very busy working on earning "stars" by being safe, respectful, and responsible!
As you can see, we've had a pretty busy first term!
